Every instance of deforestation, the melting of every glacier, every territory where drought advances, as well as the presence of pollutants in the atmosphere and in the seas is monitored by the sensitive nervous systems of satellites, whose data are being sent back to the Internet’s nervous system, which in its turn is connected to individuals’ nervous systems, and in their turn connected between themselves through the Net.

Brain waves facing a screen, and meditation

Meditation and staring at a screen share the same brain waves, but are actually different internal states. It seems that looking at a screen hooks people seducing them with a fake feeling of relaxation through the presence of alpha waves and even lower brain frequencies.

This relaxation, though, not being integrated with an attentive and aware observation of the contents of the mind (as happens in meditation) gives rise instead to an internal restlessness and stress, often unrecognized until it becomes full-blown.

Spiritual powers through technology

As Marshall McLuhan sensed, technology creates extensions for our capabiilities but at the same time amputates or alienats parts of ourselves. The classic example is of cars. On one side cars extend the legs’ capabilities letting us go further and faster, but on the other side the leg muscles are getting atrophied and towns being transformed into what they are now.

In addition to extending our physical bodies, we projected even our inner qualities on technology. So we project our need of strength, intimacy, will, peace and other qualities on technological tools which promise to extend our possibilities.

Come ha intuito Marshall McLuhan, la tecnologia cerca delle estensioni per le nostre capacità ma allo stesso momento crea delle amputazioni o alienazioni da parti di sé. Un classico esempio è l’automobile, che da una parte estende le capacità delle gambe potendo portarci più lontano e più velocemente ma dall’altra atrofizza i muscoli delle gambe e rende le città quello che sono.

Overcoming our identification with the body has traditionally been a mystical path, but that took place after having had a fully integrated body-mind-soul connection and having become aware of the full range of emotions and bodily sensations.

The split between body and mind in our society is still present and is further pushed away by long computer use where our bodies are involved in a minimal way, removing the connection in a premature manner.

With the advent of modern science, the relationship between religion and science became rather tenuous. We are used to seeing religion and science or technology as two very different areas of life.

Even nowadays there is heated debated between scientists and religious leaders on issues as staminal cells, procreation technologies, evolution and intelligent design, among others.

It could be a bit surprising to know that the origins of technology and of modern science have a common history that comes from Christianity.

Is Internet empowering us?

Since the beginning, Internet has been regarded as an instrument of democracy and Internet activism grew over the years. The Net is considered a decentralization tool that gives the power back to small groups and individuals.

But are we really empowered through technology? The 60’s students’ movement was very influential in society and well organized, maybe not even in spite of the lack of technologies but because of that lack. People had to rely on personal connections.

The liberation to be internally free in having sex the way we feel like or to be free not to have it doesn’t come by merely acting out or by repressing the actual act, but by the level of awareness that we are willing to give our sexual needs, be them indulgence or asceticism.

With the pervasivity of porn we got desensitized towards sexual images and their relationship with our soul. In this overwhelming input towards sex in society, a certain kind of independent porn could paradoxically reveal the vulnerable, human side and the connection with introspection.

Wireless communication and reality mining as a reflection of pervasive consciousness

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other wireless modalities of transmitting data through computers and modems, printers and other peripherals are expanding. Wireless connection won't be the only information post on the territory. Reality mining is the term coined by MIT Media Lab that sums up the various objects that can be transformed in data spots through tiny radio-connected sensor chips.

The appeal of wireless is not just avoiding messy cables or the convenience of being able to connect to the Net anywhere. Wireless spots have an impact on our psyche as well. They give the impression of conscious, almost alive presences spreading across the world. A net of infinite eyes and pervasive awareness where all is one and interconnected.
