Metabolizing information

The speed of e-contacts and communication prevents the full assimilation of the messages we receive. Split and fragmentary attention has become the rule for online activities, but this procedure is gradually being exported offline. But the time needed for soul maturity goes much slower than electronics.

When we are not present with our aware attention, we are only passive containers of every message we receive. In this way, we are at risk of becoming simple consumers of messages which play on a banal emotional immediacy bypassing any kind of critical analysis.

Mental territories

The need to colonize a territory and to own it traces back to an ancient survival instinct, that dragged on to modern times with the colonizations of other people’s lands. The new territories to be conquered are now at a mental level. The most coveted territory is now represented by having a good position in the ranking of search engines.

Is Internet empowering us?

Since the beginning, Internet has been regarded as an instrument of democracy and Internet activism grew over the years. The Net is considered a decentralization tool that gives the power back to small groups and individuals.

But are we really empowered through technology? The 60’s students’ movement was very influential in society and well organized, maybe not even in spite of the lack of technologies but because of that lack. People had to rely on personal connections.

The liberation to be internally free in having sex the way we feel like or to be free not to have it doesn’t come by merely acting out or by repressing the actual act, but by the level of awareness that we are willing to give our sexual needs, be them indulgence or asceticism.

With the pervasivity of porn we got desensitized towards sexual images and their relationship with our soul. In this overwhelming input towards sex in society, a certain kind of independent porn could paradoxically reveal the vulnerable, human side and the connection with introspection.

Wireless communication and reality mining as a reflection of pervasive consciousness

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other wireless modalities of transmitting data through computers and modems, printers and other peripherals are expanding. Wireless connection won't be the only information post on the territory. Reality mining is the term coined by MIT Media Lab that sums up the various objects that can be transformed in data spots through tiny radio-connected sensor chips.

The appeal of wireless is not just avoiding messy cables or the convenience of being able to connect to the Net anywhere. Wireless spots have an impact on our psyche as well. They give the impression of conscious, almost alive presences spreading across the world. A net of infinite eyes and pervasive awareness where all is one and interconnected.

The ongoing digitalization of our life brought an expansion of technologies that need our attention and time.
The right to non-information, to non-update and to silence will be a privilege in the future and one of the important signals of life quality. For a long time we correctly looked for thought and speech freedom, now we need the non-thought freedom and the right to silence.

We pretend that teenagers don’t act out the sexual messages they receive or, if they do, we expect that they will be responsible and safe. Yeah, sure. We educate them in technology, we train them in sports and we prepare them to enter the highly competitive information society. However, when it has to do with sex, the most powerful energy that a teen faces, we leave the whole responsibility to them, resulting inearlier pregnancies and HIV infections.

Subjectivity and objectivity

All sciences ground themselves in a particular approach to knowledge. Scientists believe that knowledge only has value if comes from an objective place. The myth of objectivity is so pervasive that it controls even such a subjective science as psychology, dealing as it does with the interior of the human mind.

For centuries the possibility of including our subjective experience in inquiring into the world has been inhibited; furthermore, subjectivity and objectivity have been divided into two separate worlds with separate values. Perhaps is time to let both modalities coalesce in an effective way.

Even though multitasking has been demonstrated to be counterproductive, in real life and at the computer we tend to do a growing number of activities simultaneously.

What people are most scared of is to actually have free time, to experience an emptiness that would make us aware of the meaninglessness of our lives. Any slowing down of our mind activity will give more awareness of ourselves in a deeper way than the activities we are identified with, and this is exactly what our ego tends to avoid.

The race toward the digitalization of reality has never slowed down, and it has resulted in a perception of the universe as an information processing system. The digitalization of reality has spread to the biological system and has been accelerated with the DNA sequencing of Human Genome Project.

Then scientists discovered that RNA, previously considered junk, regulates protein production and regulates genetic expression. Sequencing RNA and the classification of proteins will probably require billions of times the computational power needed for the Human Genome Project in 2005.

La digitalizzazione della realtà ha raggiunto il sistema biologico e ha subito un’accelerazione con la mappatura del DNA tramite il Progetto Genoma Umano.
